Close the Deal: 5 Tips to Go From First Hellos to a First Date
By Laura Snyder
So many of us meet our mates when we least expect it - in the elevator, waiting in line for coffee, or killing time on public transportation. With time of the essence, how can you connect with that good looking stranger in a way that they'll not only remember you, but be aching to call?
Date Maker Move #1: Relax!
You're a palm-sweating, cotton-mouthed, fast-talking and eager-to-impress nervous wreck. But before you launch off into some mentally rehearsed witty banter or lame opening line, take a deep breath and try to be natural. Okay, now remember to have a little fun. You're probably better looking with a smile on your face, but in addition to that, you're also going to be more charismatic. People are naturally drawn to someone they perceive as fun.
Date Maker Move #2: Reach out and touch someone.
Casual, nonsexual touching (like touching his or her arm when you make a point) is a good way to let someone know you're interested and determine their interest in you.
Date Maker Move #3: Be ready.
That means making the effort to look at least presentable, even if you're just going to the grocery store. We're not suggesting formal wear just to pick up the morning paper, but you don't want to give that cutie in line ahead of you the impression that you can't be bothered to take care of yourself.
Date Maker Move #4: Listen Up!
While you're hoping to impress with your stories of heroism and daring deeds, your would-be date's eyes are glazing over. Show an interest in getting to know them, and save your stories for your first date (and even then, make sure the conversation is balanced). It's about them, not about you.
Date Maker Move #5: Leave 'em wanting more.
So, the elevator's reached your floor, or you've got your coffee fix. Give that prospective date a warm handshake with a smile and say you enjoyed talking with them. Then suggest getting together to talk longer sometime and hand him or her your card. Now all you have to do is wait for the phone to ring!
